In the 10 years that I’ve visited the Ardennes, I’ve come across this place many many times. The place is a regular sight for those who drive from Bastogne to Diekirch or Ettelbruck. Now finally, on our way back home we decided to go for a walk on the Memorial Trail near Schumann’s Eck. The area near the Cafe has been part of the frontline from the start of the battle of the bulge till somewhere in the start of January. U.S. Troops of the 26th Infantry Division tried several times to take the vital crossroads, but without luck. The Germans held the line and offered fierce resistance. This is one of the reason why nowadays, the traces of war are still available in the woods near Cafe Schumann.
The community in Luxembourg set up a remembrance trail among foxholes and bombcraters. I walked a big part of the route and will provide you with pictures. This is a must see for those who want to go out and witness the World War 2 battlefields in real life!

Thanks for the recommendations. I wil return to the Bulge for the second time this Fall. I was privileged to be the Armys rep to the premier of Band of Brothers at Normandy in 2001. Sharing time with those men and their families was the highlight of my career
I went to see the trail three days ago but all panels had been removed so I couldn’t find it. We found some (probable) foxholes and a stone foundation at the edge of the forest near the parking road.
A forrest guard approached me suspiciously to see what I was up to as there had been lots of looters with metal detectors, selling their stuff and that even one of them had uncovered the remains of a german soldier and it had been a big thing with police, coroner etc.
I saw 2 new bomb shelters made of pine logs covered with dirt, he told me they were making a temporary exhibition for the 75 th anniversary in december…
